Cutting into the Endless Wasteland, Chinyere kept close to where the desert seemed to slowly fade. He knew this was the way home, the strong scent of burnt debris told him to stay close to the borders of this cracked land. He kept running and running, the need for his pride again growing.

Raena slowed to a stop as she entered the wastes, tears falling fast. Kabili was dead, Nakato was dead, Wasswa was dead! Everyone was dropping like flies! She lay down in the sand, sobbing into her paws for a long while.
When she finally roused herself, her eyes were puffy and red, tear tracks dark down her pale face. As much as she wanted to go back and grieve with her daughter, the clan came first. Their population was dangerously low.
Well, she was the queen. No male would deny her pups if she asked for them. She got to her paws and let out a loud whoop, trying to summon any males in the vicinity.

Hearing the call of his queen, the lowly male hyena headed toward the sound, head low and smiling awkwardly as he approached Raena. "Yes, my queen? How may I assist you?" He didn't know what she was doing out in the desert. Perhaps she needed help with border patrol? Oh, if only he knew, he would be the one lucky male to be chosen to mate with the queen! Still, no matter the task, this male would go as far as to give his life for the queen, as any good male should.

Raena turned to face the male, now composed and business-like. "I'm glad you heard my call," she stated, giving a slight nod. "As you may have noticed, our numbers are dwindling. It's been a long time since my last litter, and I would like you to be the father of my next."

The male hadn't been expecting that! He blushed deeply beneath his fur, but grinned like a dork, nodding quickly. "Of course, my queen." He approached slowly, keeping a very submissive position. As he moved to go around to her backside, he licked her shoulder. He might have licked her cheek, but he didn't want to tempt her to hurt him, so shoulder it was. "I'm honored." And then he got to it.
((And fade.))

Raena nodded to the male once they were finished, her mind swimming with a mixture of grief and excitement. Now that her initial panic was over, she turned and headed back for the clan. She needed to give Yanni an explanation for her sudden departure, and say goodbye to little Nakato.

Luckily, for Raena and the male, Yanni had caught up into the Endless Wasteland just as they had finished. She slowly came to a fast paced walk and she padded through the cracky and broken desert. She raised her head, ears forward and nose wiggling to indicate that she was sniffing for her mother's scent.
The female hyena slowly saw her mother's frame in the distance and quickened her past, her dead son dangling from her jaws. She needed to speak and grieve with her mother, after all, this was her grandson and her son. She slowly approached Raena, eyes glistening with tears.

Raena sat quietly, unsure of her own emotions. Both her grandchildren were dead. Wasswa's death had certainly not been Yanni's fault, she was attacked quite severely, but Nakato...Nakato was perfectly healthy. Or at least he had seemed that way. Had it been her daughter's fault that the boy died? Had she failed to teach Yanni how to be a mother? It would appear so. As much as she loved her, Raena couldn't help but feel a bit of resentment for her.
Carolina, her adopted daughter, had also left them under Yanni's care. And now another little one had died under her supervision. It was likely a coincidence, but the grieving queen saw it as more than that. She should have watched them more, made sure Yanni wasn't doing anything to harm the pups. Even if she didn't mean to hurt them, it seemed to Raena that she must have been a leading cause in their demise.
When Yanni herself came into view, Raena tried to hide these new thoughts, although she was watching the princess intently. "Lay him to rest," she said quietly. Right now was a delicate time in the clan, she couldn't afford to show too much emotional weakness now.

Yanni did notice her mother's eyes following her, watching what she was doing. Maybe the princess was just being paranoid? Heck if she knew, she was too saddened by grief to understand much. The young female hyena nodded her head "Yes mother...." she whispered sadly.
The female set her son down and started digging a small hole. She didn't have to dig for long, since pup's bodies were usually pretty small. She gently nudged the body into the hole and stared up at the ever darkening sky. "May you hunt among the stars and watch over us, my dear little Nakato" she said sadly. She looked down and moved dirt over him, a few more tears dropping.

Raena stood up quickly. She did need to make sure everything was alright back in the Heartlands, and she was feeling rather unsure about Yanni at the moment. Yes, they were quite close, but lately her daughter was acting...strange. Before she had been so distant, and now suddenly she was extremely emotional. They were swings she just couldn't explain, and it made her nervous.
The queen began the walk back home, saying a wordless goodbye to Nakato as she went. "I need to look after the clan. There is too much turmoil for us to sit idle here."

Now that all her tears were done, her eyes were spent by now. When her mother stood up and started walking home, she looked back at her, ears forward. She sighed, this was....sadly true. Everybody was dropping like flies, but there were no enemies.
Were they getting a disease? An illness? Too much heat? She wouldn't know, all she knew was that the clan was mysteriously dying on the inside. "Yes mother" she said before slowly getting up and, with a final howl and a whoop, she followed after her.

As Ige wandered into the Endless Wasteland, she may or may not have come across the queen and princess along the way, but if she did, she was too distracted to notice. It didn't take her long to find a suitable place to bury Kabili, because after all, all of the desert looked the same. Taking deep breaths, she gently laid Kabili's body down, then began to dig into the sand, kicking it behind her. It was a difficult process, considering Kabili wasn't tiny like Nakato, but she managed okay. Though at some point she had started crying again, and once the hole was dug up, she turned to her dead mate, staring down at him for a moment before lowering her head to nuzzle him gently. "Goodbye, Kabili. I love you."
She then grabbed his scruff, dragging him and dropping him into the hole. She then began kicking the sand once again, now over Kabili, and when finally he was completely buried, she took a deep breath and started heading back. She didn't want to leave him. She wanted to stay and mourn his death a little longer. But she had to get back to her children right away. She had no time to mourn.
