Sollux sniffed at the rhino before turning his nose up with a scowl. No way was he going to eat that when he could have milk! The young cub watched the proceedings, but when it looked like they would be going with Tau he ran forward, slamming his head straight into Khalfani's leg. He bounced back a little, shaking his slightly bruised noggin before glaring up at his father.
"I don't want to go with Tau! He's a big stupid head, and Desta's a dumb baby!" he wailed, throwing himself down onto his stomach and covering his face with his oversized paws.

Last Ate: Day 8 Health: 64/79 ((I'll fix this once the stats go back down... I dunno if they did yet or not, I can't remember what her health was before.))
Baneth saw her oldest son approach, welcoming and returning his nuzzle. "Of course, Khalfani. You know I'll always be here for you and your family to visit whenever you want," she murmured, licking the top of his head. No matter how big Khal got or how old, he would still be her first cub, and she would cherish him no matter what he did.
Abeni finally spoke up again, and the leopardess just stared at her with a raised brow. "Whatever you say, kitten," she replied, finally turning to leave the territory. But her exit was interrupted by a horrified scream; Ambokile. Something was terribly wrong.
"Ambokile!" she roared, rushing towards the den, paws thundering across the dry ground. She slid into the den, nearly tripping, when her eyes fell upon Tarik's body. His skin was shriveled and dried, his body beginning to decay. "Tarik!" she cried, leaning down to nudge him. Baneth knew Tarik was gone, but it just wouldn't register in her mind. "Tarik... Tau!" she screamed, stumbling and collapsing onto her belly.

Suddenly there was a scream from his other son, and Tau's head whipped around. Terrified that something had happened to Ambokile he scrambled over toward the scream, eyes wide in fear for his son. He didn't know what could have happened, but he was terrified to find out.
Baneth beat him into the den, and soon there was another scream. She was yelling Tarik's name. The quietest cub of them all, the runt. Tau felt his heart drop as he shoved himself into the den, and saw his cub lying there, dead, his skin sunken in. Tears filled his eyes, and he let out a choked sob. "Tarik..." It wasn't the first time it had happened to him. Even in the zoo, with all of their medical care, sometimes accidents still happened. But it never got any better.
He crawled closer, nudging his son, praying that maybe somehow he would wake up. But he knew he wouldn't. Tears falling down his face, Tau reached out for the little cub, pulling him closer to himself and Baneth, then nuzzled his dead child and mate. But after a moment of that, he remembered his other, older son, and how he had been the one to discover this. And despite wanting to cuddle the dead cub and Baneth, who was in no doubt an extreme amount of emotional pain, he turned to Ambokile and wrapped one of his front legs around him, pulling him closer. "I'm so sorry." He whispered the words over and over again, but to who, he didn't know. To his dead son, for not keeping a better eye on him? To Ambokile, for having to witness this? Or to Baneth, for having to suffer what he could only assume was the first dead of a child she'd had to live through?

Nuru watched the proceedings calmly, still grinning over her cubs. Of course, she was less thrilled, and far more frightened when Ambokile's scream sounded, and soon it became clear that something had happened to little Tarik. The young female backed away from the den, going to the other cubs, who were left alone. "It's alright, little ones," she murmured, standing close to Adeleke and Astennu.

((So tempted... okay, screw it. FUCKLELE.))
The leopardess was lying on the ground, tears beginning to stream down her face as Tau entered the den. He immediately fell as well, Tau pulling her and their deceased son closer. Before long, Baneth was full-out sobbing, her sharp breaths shooting pain through her chest and burning her lungs.
She had only dealt with a loss once, and it wasn't a cub's death. Nuru, her previous mate, had caused her an immense amount of grief, but his death was nothing compared to Tarik's death. Her own flesh and blood, dead, right in front of her. And he had been alive and well just a few days ago! Baneth sucked in air, her chest muscles beginning to spasm, causing her to hyperventilate for a short moment. She buried her face into Tau's neck, not caring if his mane actually suffocated her.
Horrible thoughts rushed into her mind. She must have done something wrong. Her milk must have been bad. She was a terrible mother. Baneth let out a loud, sobbing shriek as the words dug deeper into her mind, their harsh meanings chipping away at her strength. Her legs became jelly, the leopardess falling straight onto her side and not attempting to get up again.

Astennu grinned at the mention of having their own territory. A whole area, all to themselves! But before he could say anything further, Ambokile's voice sliced through the cold evening air. Immediately, his mother shot towards the den, and she, too, screamed. She cried out for Tau, who also took off, and Astennu was extremely confused. All he knew was that his youngest brother, Tarik, was in danger.
The confused lipard began to trot towards the den, but Nuru stepped in his way. He could hear his mother's wailing cries from the den, and Astennu began to tremble. He looked up to Nuru, terrified of what happened to Tarik. "N-Nuru..? What h-happened to T-T-Tarik?" he asked, his voice wavering. Oh, Astennu knew what happened. But he wouldn't accept it.

Adeleke simply smiled as she carried her little sister outside, setting her down after a moment but holding her close with one paw. "It's okay, Nephy. We're going to find a new home soon." She nuzzled her little sister, licking the top of her head. But then suddenly she heard her brother scream and she tensed, holding the little cub closer. Her mother ran into the den, and soon her own scream cold be heard. Tarik. Adeleke paled beneath her fur and she looked down to little Nephthys, who she suspected had just lost a littermate. "It's okay, Nephthys. Just look at me, okay? Just look at me." She felt her own heart breaking, but that didn't matter. She had to make sure Nephthys stayed calm.

Ambokile was confused and scared. He knew what death was, but to see it so close...it was frightening. He harbored little affection for his younger siblings, but finally he looked back at the body and at his mother, whimpering. He pushed himself under Tau's chin, staring at the decaying corpse fearfully. "What's wrong with him? Why's mommy so upset?" he cried, unable to look away. He knew what had happened, but he couldn't comprehend it.

Desta had heard shrieks, wails, cries, and roars. All of this scared her, and on top of that, an insult was thrown at her. Ear pinned back against her head, everybody else was being comforted, but at the same time they were panicking. Tarik's name entered her ears. Was something wrong with her brother? Though she never wanted to go see, all these loud noises frightened her.
The little cub slowly backed away, shaking slightly. She looked around wildly before running off. She needed to get away from these noises! She darted off to a little hiding place, a little ditch was made just under a bush where it grew and she slid in, the foliage hiding her. She laid there, shaking in fear.

Nuru sat down, pulling Astennu between her forpaws and licking his head gently. "Oh, Astennu, I'm so sorry. Sometimes, when a cub is born too small, they have something wrong inside them. I'm afraid Tarik was one of those unfortunate cubs," she said quietly. "Your parents are with him right now, and we need to give them space for a moment, alright?"

Tau held his son closer, his tears soaking into Ambokile's fur. But as the boy questioned what was going on, he was at a loss for words. He couldn't answer. He didn't know how. He closed his eyes tightly for a moment, before pulling back to look at him. "Ambokile, I... go find your older brother, Khalfani, okay? Mom and I will be back out in a bit. I... I promise we'll explain then." But he couldn't right now. Right now, he wanted to hold Baneth and comfort her.
So, he released Ambokile and turned back to her, wrapping his other front leg around her and holding her close, licking away her tears. "I'm so sorry, Bane. I'm so, so sorry."

Musoke had been overjoyed when Baneth said he could go, before smiling down awkwardly at the little cub, Desta. She seemed attached to him, for some odd reason. But then suddenly everything exploded and there was screaming and crying and his ears pinned back uncomfortably. From the sounds of it, a cub had just died. One of Baneth's cubs, 'Tarik.' He didn't know the cub, but he couldn't help but feel bad for Baneth. Perhaps she would take this as a sign that her mate was weak, and now she would take him as her mate instead?
But no, the lion had rushed into the den after her. Sighing, he turned away, only to notice Desta running off again. Well, it wouldn't do for two of them to die. So he followed after the little cub, sitting down near the bush where she hid. "No hide from Musoke. I find scent. See you hide, anyway."

Desta didn't exactly want to hide from everybody, but the noises were too much for her. As a familiar scent hit her nose, followed by a voice, the little cub peered out. So her hiding space wasn't so great after all. Maybe it was her brown and black pelt, probably.
She crawled out. "I won't hide from you" she mewed with a small smile. Musoke had been special to her since well, he had been all alone when she first met him. He had an odd aroma of comfort. She sat down, looking up at him "What happened to Tarik?" she asked, too much of a chicken to go find out herself.

"Tarik..." he murmured, the lipard's eyes welling up with tears. How could his brother have died so young? Nuru tried explaining it, but he couldn't accept it. He wouldn't. He wiped one eye with a paw, whimpering. "I wanna see my brother," he mumbled, sniffling. He had never experienced death, and Astennu couldn't really understand it. He was trying, but the idea of his own brother passing away just wouldn't settle into his mind.

Ambokile got to his paws, stumbling out of the den. He immediately circled around it so that no one could see him, not really wanting to see anyone. He was feeling shaky and nervous, as well as a little neglected. It felt like as soon as Tau had realized it was him, as soon as he spoke, he was being sent away.
The once selfless cub was feeling more isolated than ever. After a moment he stood up, shaking his head. He didn't like it here. Bane and Tau were always fighting, his siblings never seemed to want to play with him, and he didn't know what his function in the family was anymore.
A moment later, the only sign Ambokile had been there were a few lightly swaying branches. He crept quietly through the brush until he was a suitable distance away before finally bolting.
