Raena sighed, listening to Ige talk to her son. She didn't approve of shielding pups from death, but they weren't her pups, so she kept out of it. "Ige, try to monitor what he's eating and how active he is, that way if any changes in diet affect his activity we might find whatever it is that's giving our males this virus. And if it is caused by food, I would suggest making him vomit if he gets lethargic."
With the discussion over for now, she got to her paws and padded over to the bull elephant carcass, ripping into it and eating her fill. As she chewed, she thought. Things had been so peaceful and calm for so long, and suddenly they were being ravaged by disease. What if it was the water? Perhaps the river had been infected? Well, there were only two other water sources in the area. Perhaps she ought to go have a visit with her old ally Ashur.
"Ige, Yanni, stay here and keep watch. There is also a chance that the river has been infected. I'm going to pay the Sunbaked a visit and see if we can get permission to drink from their lakes for a while," Finished with her meal, the aging queen got to her paws, ready to head out.

"Y-yeah, 'm strong!" Kayode said, sitting up and nuzzling his mother. "'m not lazy, I promise I'm not lazy," he squirmed closer to her, nestling himself against her belly. He was reassured, but still the fear that he would catch some sort of sleepy sick made him seek comfort. He listened as the queen talked, whimpering slightly. He had puked earlier, did that mean he was getting sick, or was that getting rid of the sick?

Ige frowned at her son, but quickly tried to cover it up with a smile. "Here, let's try and get again, shall we?" He had thrown up the sable, but perhaps there had just been something in that animal's flesh, something that her older and stronger immune system hadn't caught. So, she walked over to the male elephant, sniffing at it before pulling off a small chunk and dropping it near Kayode. It smelled fine to her, and as she pulled off her own chunk and swallowed, she concluded that it couldn't possibly be diseased. It was safe, so surely her pup would be able to swallow this fine, right?
((I just now realized. There is no food in the Barrens area that is edible to Kayode. O.O Once he becomes an adolescent, Mommy's gonna have to take him out to do some hunting.))

Kayode followed his mother, sniffing the meat nervously. The result of his last meal hadn't exactly boosted his confidence, but after a moment of inspection, and slight drooling; he gulped down the hunk of meat. For a few moments he seemed fine, and his tail wagged proudly, a grin spreading across his muzzle. "Look mamma, I did it!" He said, proud to have eaten his first proper meal successfully.
It was another few minutes before he realized something was wrong. The meat stayed down a good fifteen minutes, but finally his stomach heaved again, and it came up as a half-digested blob. Kayode whimpered, backing away. He looked up at his mother with frightened eyes, tail tucked between his legs. "M-mamma, w-what's wrong w-with me?" he whimpered, licking his lips and panting anxiously.

Yanni had been sitting, watching the Heartlands like her mother had told her to when a sickening sound was heard. Literally sickening. her ears went forward slightly and she got up, padding over to Ige and Kayode to see some throw up on the ground near them. She heard the pup whimpering for his mother and she gazed at them.
"Has this happened before?" She asked. Maybe the male pup was just sick from anxiety because of the current situation that the Barrens Clan was unfortunately facing.

Ige sighed in relief when her son finally seemed to swallow the meat fine, and she smiled at him, licking the top of his head. But all of her relief was crushed several minutes later when she turned around after laying down for a nap and saw him throwing up. She paled beneath her fur and pushed herself to her paws and rushed over, licking the top of his head. "N-Nothing, Sweetheart. Nothing is wrong with you, I promise." She only wished she could say for sure. "It's just... we... we didn't see it die." She blinked as she thought of this, hope once more filling in her chest. "The sable. The elephant. We didn't see them die. There must be something wrong with their bodies... I just didn't notice because my immune system... they're just not good, alright? But we'll find something. I promise." She nuzzled him closely, trying to fight back the fear that threatened to take over her body. "We're going to find fresh meat. We'll kill it ourselves. We'll know it's healthy then."
Of course, she'd be the one doing the killing, and franky, Ige hoped she still knew how to fight. Taking deep breaths, she looked off into the distance, ears pinned back. We're going hunting. Now. Right now." She started walking, but paused and looked back. "Yejide, you stay here. Come on, Kayode." Really, she felt bad for leaving her daughter behind, but Yejide had hardly moved at all in days. Of course it didn't erase Ige's preference for her daughter, simply because she was female, but the mother also didn't want to push her if she was tired. So, she'd stay behind.
Yanni spoke up then and Ige gave her a low growl. Not a wise thing to do, as she was the princess, but the mother didn't want to be bothered by her right this moment. "Nevermind him. We're going hunting."

As Yanni asked her question, a growl rumbled from the hyena. Her ears went back a bit defensively, distaste practically written on her face. This hyena was NOT in the mood for being growled at, for goodness sakes she's lost almost everything she loves. She lost her mate, She lost her daughter, and now her only son died. She bared her fangs "Show some respect. I have lost my daughter, son, and mate. You still have your pups."
With a menacing glare, she whipped around and padded back to the den, tail swishing in anger. How dare Ige growl at her, she hadn't even given her support when her son died!

Kayode followed his mother, shaking slightly. He still felt a little sick, but Ige's reassurance helped a little. "Okay, Mamma, I'll help you kill all the animals!" He declared. After a few moments he was bounding along at her heels, eager to help his mother hunt. He felt a small spark of pride as Ige told Yejide to stay behind; he still hadn't grasped the hierarchy. Though he was naturally obedient, he hadn't seen any adult males aside from his father. If Ige let him, he would likely become far more dominant than the average male, but for the moment he was still a young pup willing to listen to his mother.

Ige was very much tempted to just turn and snarl at Yanni again, just to spite her. The female had never been the most loyal of hyenas, being more aggressive than even the queen herself, and now that she was facing the death of her mate and possibly a sickness with her son, it wasn't going to help her respect. But, thankfully, she held back and just started walking toward the border with a huff, keeping her head high and her expression determined.
