I wanted to run this by you guys and see what you think.
Let's say two new and very special species are added; the Jackal (Black back AND Side striped allowed) and Vultures (any African species of Vulture). These two species would be special because their goal isn't to win territory or destroy the Painted Army... their goal is to /consume/.
Every Jackal/Vulture only needs to eat leopard share to not starve... but every time they eat 2 lion shares of food, they gain +1 stat. All jackals and vultures start with 0 stats & 30 health. The stats gained would probably be decided by dice rolls so that every jackal/vulture is a bit random, though the dice roll would have health gain as the most common.
The difference between the two species would be Vultures can of course fly. So you can't chase, catch up to, and kill a vulture like you could a leopard or antelope (unless you followed it and waited for it to land within swiping range). Jackals meanwhile would get to choose from Herbivore Attributes/Flaws (with obvious exclusions to Shielding. Featherweight would just always make your body be worthless upon being killed).
Their bodies are like babies; they can only be eaten once by any species. When they don't have any stats gained, or have under a certain amount gained, their bodies don't leave anything behind, so only long-lasting jackals/vultures would be worth killing. Making one impulsively and then abandoning it would not add to the stockpile.
Story-wise the Jackals/Vultures could have come from far away (likely from the north/northeast), their migration into these lands made easy by the Painted Army being weakened and extracted from their lands like they have been.
If the vultures/Jackals become strong enough, I welcome them to attempt making their own factions and taking land. But their initial intention will be gluttonous clean-up.
Incidentally there's a verrry high chance that all solitary animals (herbivore AND carnivore) will be given a collective Counter, much like the factions do. Each species having a smaller counter within that. (...with the exception of herbivores, who will have a smaller counter for all herbivore species) This will give higher weight to solitary animals deaths, breeding and also limit how many there can be of one species without breeding. If the counter goes to 0, just like the factions, the species will go extinct. This would include Vultures/Jackals should they be added.
