Ammit flinched as Ashur turned around, clearly catching onto what Rudo was going on about. She groaned, falling onto her belly and resting her chin on the ground. Her face was painted with an irritated expression, and she just shook her head, rolling her eyes. "Kids, huh?" she said, almost joking. Almost.

Kayin kept quiet this time, quite ready for Ashur to tell Rudo the truth about his feelings. He either loved both their moms or neither of them, and that was that. The elder stepped back, trotting to the larger of the two watering holes and taking a big gulp. He had never thought about whether Ashur loved the females before, but now as he thought about it it sounded silly. How could he love anyone? It was his job to keep the pride safe and to father cubs, but if he loved one lioness and not another that would make him biased in things like protecting one female over another and training cubs!
He shook his head, quite ready for his father to clear things up. But he also felt a need to speak his mind. "I don't think Dad loves anyone. If he did then he would want to pay more attention to one lioness over another, and spend more time with the cubs from the lioness he loves best."

Dnali couldn't help but wonder where Rudo got THAT idea in his head. If Ashur were going to fall for anyone, it certainly wasn't Ammit! She had caused so much drama with Askari, which resulted in the still-wounded Jasiri and the death of Askari. If he fell for anyone it would be her. After all, she had been here since the beginning of his reign, and she was loyal all the time.
Still, she wasn't going to say that out loud. Ammit was her friend after all. She chuckled, shaking her head. As Kayin spoke she felt a small pang, of course Ashur didn't love anybody. And it was a good thing, too. She certainly wasn't going to fall for anyone either; if he was ever defeated her loyalties would shift to the stronger male! That was obviously the smarter decision.
But then why did she feel sick thinking about it?

To say Ashur was surprised by his son's question was an understatement. He looked to Ammit, brow raised, and saw her expression, and then Kayin butted in, and he sighed in annoyance. This was ridiculous. Where was his son getting these ideas from? Looking to Rudo again, he said, "Don't ask silly questions." Although, even as he turned around and started head off to the Drylands so that he could show his children the rest of the territory, he was starting to put the pieces together. Ammit's expression at Dnali being so close to him, and now Rudo's question... but he wasn't going to make assumptions. Although he made a mental note to talk to Ammit about it later. "Come on. I want to show everyone the rest of the territory before it starts raining."

Rudo frowned a little at everyone's initial responses, especially Kayin's. He glared a little at his older brother before looking expectantly at Ashur, almost hopefully. When his father finally asked, for a moment the cub was confused, but then a moment later he grinned brightly. He didn't understand the meaning behind Ashur's answer, and was going off the assumption that the question was silly because it should be obvious that Ashur DOES love Ammit! Perhaps he was just embarrassed to say the words outright in front of everyone, especially after Kayin's comment.
Grinning broadly, he turned back to his mother and licked her nose happily and whispering, "He's just too shy to say it. But he does love you, Mommy. I can tell!"
