Raena stood on the border, looking around to see if any patrols were nearby. When it became clear that no one was around, she reared up and let out a loud volley of whooping. Hopefully her old ally would remember her call, as well as remember their past friendship. If Sunbaked would not help them in this, they would either have to continue drinking the possibly tainted water or invade Clapperclaw.

Ashur was still very much confused over Ammit, but he smiled when Dnali came up. He still didn't understand why anyone would be so affectionate, but mostly he was just relieved to see that somebody was acting normal. "It seems everyone's mood has been changing with the weather, lately." He sighed and shook his mane. At least they were approaching the Watering Holes, so Ashur could do what he did best: Be a leader. He couldn't stand all of this drama.
As they approached and he saw only Raena there, he went straight up to her, standing tall. "Yes, Queen of the Barrens? Has something happened?"

Rudo grinned brightly at his mother, hopping up to lick her nose. "Maybe you should tell Daddy you love him. I bet he'd say he loves you too!" But then they were approaching the Watering Holes and the cub fell quiet. There was a strange animal there, and his eyes widened in shock. It didn't look anything like a lion! "Is that the hyena?" He wanted to get closer, but he also wanted to stay by his mother, in case this turned deadly. ... Only so he could protect her, of course!

Raena was surprised by everyone accompanying the king, and silently grit her teeth. She didn't want to have to speak of weakness in front of all these lions! But she didn't have much of a choice, so after a brief moment she began. "Greetings, King Ashur. I have come to ask for your assistance. Some sort of disease has infected the males of my clan, and only one male pup remains. We are unsure of the cause, but I fear that the river has been infected by some sort of virus. We can't be sure, but until we know it is safe I would ask that you allow us to come here to drink. Thus far only the few males with us have perished, however I am not sure it won't begin affecting the rest of the clan as well. I need your assistance in this matter, if you would grant us a daily visit to drink it would be more than sufficient, and we should not enter your territory for any other reason."

Kayin frowned, following Rudo and Ammit. "No, why would he have cubth with my mom if he didn't love her, too? Either he loveth them both or he doethn't like either, cauthe they both groom hith mane a bunch and he payth attention to everyone," he retorted, continuing his little rant even after Raena came into view. He finally quieted down as she began to speak, quickly going to stand by his father. He was about shoulder height now, his light gold mane turning gold-brown near the base and muscle developing. Looking at the hyena with both curiosity and caution, he looked rather dangerous.

Ammit gently put a paw over Rudo's head. "Hush, Rudo," she said, smirking. They finally reached the hyena, Raena, and the entire group fell quiet. She watched as the Barrens queen spoke of a crisis occurring in their territory. She felt sympathy for the queen, though she didn't know if Ashur would allow them into the territory. She waited curiously for Ashur's answer, not knowing how he would react.

Dnali stood close to Ashur, pelt brushing his as they listened to the queen speak. She glanced over at her son, wondering what those three could possibly be talking about. A moment later, though, Kayin joined his father and she couldn't help but smile. He was already so big, he was sure to get his father's height and strength.
Finally she turned her thoughts to Raena again. Some sort of disease that affected only the males? How strange. As much as she ached at the thought of a pup dying like that, she couldn't help but fear that the hyenas might infect their own water and perhaps pass on the illness to Kayin or little Rudo. Maybe even Ashur; though she shuddered at the thought.

Ashur listened to Raena explain the situation, a frown on his face. Really, he didn't know what to say. He certainly didn't like the idea of other animals coming onto his territory, allies or not. And his pride was strong enough, so if he said no and it upset the Barrens, there was nothing to worry about, right? And yet, Ashur knew that if hard times came upon his pride, they may need to seek the hyena's help. And anyway, they had helped him defeat Clapperclaw. This was the least he could do.
Sighing, he nodded. "Very well. One visit a day for each member. And you may never go beyond the Watering Holes." He also thought about them possibly spreading the disease, and he looked to each of the two bodies of water, thinking. "And you may only drink from one waterhole. This one." He pointed with his nose to the smallest one. Looking to her again, he offered a friendly smile. "Was there anything else?"

Rudo clamped his mouth shut, looking to Raena, though there was no doubt that as soon as the queen was gone, he was going to continue the awkward conversation. He didn't really understand what was being said, but Ashur seemed to have it settled soon enough. How boring! Huffing, he hopped up onto his two hind legs and started batting at his mother's nose. "Maybe when we explore, you can tell Daddy you love him. I can help!" He was whispering, or trying to, but his child voice was a little louder than he intended, and he giggled a little.

Ammit was trying to pay attention to the conversation between the higher-ranking animals when Rudo tried "whispering" to her. Instead, his voice was more of a quiet speaking voice, and Ammit's eyes grew wide and her ears fell. "Hush, Rudo!" she said quietly, looking down at him quite sternly. Ammit wouldn't tell Ashur anything like that, no matter how true it may be. She didn't want to find out that he only saw her as a pride mate, and she knew that part was inevitable.

Raena let out a small sigh of relief, and was about to take her leave, but suddenly she thought that perhaps the disease wasn't only affecting her clan. "The victims have all displayed the same symptoms. They're largely fine for a while, but then they get slow, only moving every five or six hours. Eventually they just stop moving and functioning all together; they waste away very quickly after that, even if they ate recently. Has anything like that happened around here before?"

Ashur's ears pinned back and he glanced back at Ammit and Rudo. He could hear them talking, though he didn't know what exactly they were saying, but Ammit looked irate. Quickly turning back to Raena, he blinked. "Err, yes. It's happened. But it wasn't just males then, and it was a long time ago. We haven't suffered many deaths for a while." Aside from his stillborn cub, at least. "I believe then it was just normal diseases passing through. It could be the same with your kind, and it's just coincidence that only males have died. You said one male still reminds, correct?"
But as he said, not many had died for a while, at least not of disease, so he didn't feel the need to continue on with this conversation. And anyway, he wanted to know what was going on with Ammit and his son. "Now if you'll excuse me..." He turned around, looking to his lioness. "What's going on?"

Raena was a little miffed by Ashur's curt reply, but she supposed being allowed to drink here was more than enough. He could easily have turned her away, after all. "Thank you for your time," she said, as graciously as she could. Before she left she padded to the designated watering hole, drinking quickly before turning for home.

Despite her stern voice, Rudo wasn't afraid of his mother, and he just grinned at her. But then Ashur turned and spoke to them, and the little cub dropped down to his four paws and looked to his father, smiling brightly. "Daddy, you love Mommy, right?" He waited for a positive response, which he was certain would come, and he looked between both of his parents, expecting them both to say that they loved each other.
