Ashur led the way to the Watering Holes, keeping his head high and his tail gently swaying, just in case Kazimir happened to be nearby. He was going to show his dominance and his strength, even if not directly. Unfortunately for the king, Kazimir was long gone with Jasiri, but oh well.
But once they finished the Watering Holes, he allowed himself to relax, walking to the edge of the water to lean down and drink. Feeling the cool water slide into his belly reminded him that he should probably eat soon, but for now, he turned his attention to the lionesses. Burial wasn't really something the Sunbaked did. Usually they would have just left Horus in the Crossroads, and that'd be that. But if this was what Ammit wanted, then he would go along with it.

Sekai was rather disappointed that she couldn't carry Horus, but then she supposed she was still a bit too small yet. Even if she was much larger than any of her siblings, and growing at a fast rate. Oddly enough, the girl was even growing a rather fluffy neck, though she hardly noticed this as strange as she followed behind her father, next to Ammit, keeping an intense gaze on Horus, as if to make sure he was comfortable as he was carried off to his grave. But he seemed comfy enough, so finally she rushed over to her mother, looking up at her curiously. "Mom, when we bury Horus, will I ever see him again?" She looked absolutely terrified of the idea of never seeing her little brother again. How would she protect him if she couldn't see him?

Dnali licked her daughter's head, smiling sadly. "No, little one. Horus will be in the ground, and his body will rot and become earth again. You can come visit his grave, though." she led the way to the place she had told Ammit about, where large flowering bushes and other plants grew. They looked a little stifled from yesterday's heat, but it was still quite beautiful.
"Don't worry, Sekai. Horus' spirit will be with us always. He will give his family strength, and we will always remember him, even if we never got the chance to meet him," she added, clearing away some dead leaves and beginning to dig.

Kayin followed, walking alongside his little brother with a smile. He had been looking forward to getting out of the Watch for a while now, and here they were! "C'mon, Rudo, let'th explore!" He said, bumping shoulders with the shaky cub. The young male was developing bulk and muscle, still a little smaller than his sister Sekai, but beginning to sprout a fluffy golden mane.
After a minute he bounded up to Sekai, looking back and grinning at Rudo and his two sisters, both of whom were following behind. "Hey Thekai, I'm almotht ath big ath you now!" He giggled, nudging her happily. He felt the need to lighten the mood, bounding around and smiling. When the watering holes came into sight, he ran straight up to them, an awed gasp bursting forth. "Wow! That'th a lot of water!" He cried. They had been born in a rainstorm, so he was familiar with the stuff, but this was more than he'd ever seen before!

The lioness padded behind the others, gently carrying Horus in her jaws. His body was cold and limp, but Ammit tried to not think about it. She was here to bury her child and let his spirit go into the afterlife, and that was that. She followed Dnali after Ashur settled himself down, the lioness glancing behind to ensure Rudo was following as well.
The spot Dnali had mentioned was indeed beautiful; many flowering plants surrounded the small spot, the water glittering nearby. She set down the small, cold body and helped Dnali dig, the lioness keeping quiet for the most part. She didn't know whether to speak or not; her emotions were a bit strange. She felt sad and yet relieved; and this made her feel guilty. Why did she feel such relief when her son was dead? Ammit shook her head slightly, not sure of how to express it. Instead, she focused on digging.
When the hole was finished, Ammit lifted Horus and placed him carefully into the hole. She laid him on his side, nudging his head to position him in a sleeping position. "Farewell, my dear Horus. The gods have let you onto this earth, but they require you back at home. Bring our family strength, my sweet child," she murmured, a soft smile on her face. She turned to Dnali and gave her cheek a friendly head rub. "Thank you, Dnali, for everything. This is a beautiful spot for him to rest," she thanked, turning to bury her child.
At the last paw-stroke, Horus was buried, and Ammit had an idea. Sekai was clearly struggling with the concept of death, and Ammit decided to help. "Sekai, would you like to put a flower on top of Horus' grave? I'm sure he'd like it," she grinned, motioning towards a flowering bush.

Sekai tried to help as Ammit buried Horus, though she felt weird about it. She was helping to put Horus into a dark and lonely spot, forever. Still, the adults must know best, so she didn't say anything, and when Horus was finally in the ground and covered by dirt, she looked at the grave sadly, but nodded quickly at Ammit's suggestion. Smiling uncertainly, she rushed over toward the bush, searching very carefully for the prettiest flower she could find, and when she finally did, she very gently pulled it off the bush with her teeth before rushing back over. Once she had returned to the grave, she carefully set the flower down, as though it were some fragile object that could shatter in her teeth, then quickly backed up to study her work. After a moment of intense staring, she nodded a little to herself. "I thought maybe he wouldn't like being alone out here so much. But I think that he'll like it anyhow, 'cause it's so pretty."

Ashur helped the girls dig but then stood back as Ammit put the dirt over their son, figuring this would be a little more personal. But once the cub was gone beneath the earth, he sighed but smiled a little as his daughter got a flower. He turned to his elder son then, nodding a little. "Mmhm. It's the Watering Holes. Water is important, and this is the only source of it in our territory, aside from puddles when it rains." He returned his gaze to his lionesses, then glanced down at his son, sighing and thinking. "His soul rests with us now. He will give us life, and strengthen us." He then turned to his youngest, raising a paw to gently pat him on the head. "And he lives on in Rudo. Rudo, you will make us all proud. I know you will."

Rudo didn't really understand what was going on, but he smiled and went along with it. He had followed after Kayin, so he didn't see his littermate being buried, and as he looked down at the water he saw his reflection. His eyes widened in shock at the sight, and he quickly backed up, right beneath his father's paw apparently, because it was soon right on top of his head. He looked up at his father, brow raised, and once the paw was off the little cub scrambled to return to his mother's side. Looking up at her curiously, he frowned. "Wha's goin' on?"

Shadedapple had just come from the watch, and observed the tragic scene. One day she would have kits. But not today. On her own terms. She walked through the brush, stopped for a bit, then walked to the south to patrol the barren's border. Better safe than sorry!

Ammit grinned as Sekai did as she suggested, the little cub running away and coming back with a flower. She leaned down to give the kindhearted female a nuzzle. "We can always come out here to see him, Sekai," she replied, looking up as Ashur began to speak. She looked down to Rudo, who seemed confused, and she chuckled a bit. "You'll understand when you're older, my dear," she murmured, knowing death is a very difficult concept for some cubs to understand.
Ammit then turned and approached the water, sitting down at the shore. "Rudo, come here and taste the water," she called sweetly, smiling at her tiny cub.

Rudo looked uncertain that he would understand when he was older. If he couldn't understand now, how could he possibly understand later? Why couldn't she just tell him now?
But as she went to the water, he immediately forgot about that and perked up, rushing after her. "Momma, who dat?" He looked down at his reflection, eyes wide. But then she said to taste the water, which is what he assumed the other creature was in it (his reflection) and he gasped, shaking his head. "No, no! No eat! I don't wanna eat another person, Momma!" He looked up at his mother pleadingly, begging her with his eyes to not make him eat another lion.

Ashur watched everyone carefully, before sighing and laying down near the water, outstretching his paws so that they soaked in the cool water. It wasn't often he got to just lay down and relax like this, and he savored the moment, even if he was still silently mourning his stillborn cub. At the very least, Rudo seemed strong and eager to learn. And with Askari dead, Jasiri just... Jasiri, and Kayin being much too nice for his own good, Rudo might be his best change at an heir now. Ashur was still strong, and he didn't plan on dying for a good long while yet, but there was no denying that someday, if some other animal didn't get him, then age would. He needed a suitable heir before then. Somebody who was strong, intelligent, yet trustworthy. Askari might have been that heir, but then he had proven himself unworthy at the last moment, crushing Ashur's hopes.
Sighing, he shook the thoughts away. He still had a while yet. The king wasn't going anywhere for a long time, so long as he had anything to say about it.

The lioness smiled softly as her son looked at his reflection. "That is you, Rudo. You can see yourself when you look into the water," she answered, flicking her tail happily. However, when her son was told to drink, he panicked. He thought he was going to eat himself! "Rudo, dear, you aren't eating another lion!" she chuckled. "That's just your reflection. See? I'm in the water, too!" she said, holding her face over the water to show him her reflection.
Ammit inched closer to her son to the point where he was now between her front paws. Reaching out carefully, Ammit touched the surface of the water with her paw. Both reflections rippled, and Ammit grinned. "See? It won't hurt you. Go ahead and taste it," she said, dipping her head and lapping quietly at the water.
